The electric motor: numerous advantages

For both propulsion and maintenance, the electric motor requires little maintenance and has the lowest operating costs. It also reduces noise when sailing. When fitted with rechargeable batteries, they can even offer interesting energy independence. If you have electric accumulators or non-rechargeable batteries, you'll need to make regular trips to port to charge the batteries and avoid unpleasant surprises at sea. There's no fuel tank, the system is clean and odorless, but you do have to bear in mind that charging batteries takes a little longer than filling up with gasoline. And of course, it's always possible to sail with a back-up battery.

The electric motor is designed for boats up to 3 meters in length, although some manufacturers are expanding their range. Designed for use at sea, electric motors are ideal for environmentally conscious sailors who like to cover short distances in calm conditions, without speed being a priority.

In addition to electric motors, there are internal combustion engines, which are often more powerful but less efficient. This type of engine is more suited to larger boats, to navigation in waters with strong currents, for long distances or simply for vessels that want to enjoy speed.

A stern drive motor with a range of functions

The electric motor is sometimes installed on the bow, on a baseplate or on the transom.

Depending on the size of your boat, you can use the stern motor as a main engine, or as an auxiliary thruster if your boat is larger. A stern electric motor is useful in salt water, for stabilizing the boat in current, for navigating in shallow waters or for trolling. Electric motors installed on a boat navigating in the marine environment contain parts treated to resist marine erosion. Generally white in color, they are also more powerful than freshwater motors, so they can withstand harsh weather conditions.

Electric motors can be adapted to suit the profile of the boat: fishing boats, rowboats or pleasure craft can all be equipped. Before choosing a stern drive, you need to think carefully about how you intend to use your boat, the weight of the boat, the weight of the equipment on board, the weight of the passengers and the length of the boat.
