FENDERS PROTECT THE SHIP

A fender is a piece of shipboard equipment that can be used to protect the boat from impact with docks or other boats while at anchor. They generally consist of inflatable cushions or foam mattresses which are placed on the sides of the boat to absorb shocks.

Several types of fenders are available:

• Inflatable fenders: These models are generally made of PVC or rubber and can be inflated or deflated as required. They are lightweight and easy to handle, and can be stored compactly when not in use.
• Foam fenders: These models are made of polyethylene foam or polyurethane foam, and are generally stronger than inflatable fenders. They are also heavier and more difficult to handle, but can be more durable and offer better impact protection.
• Rigid fenders: These models are made of hard plastic and are generally heavier and more difficult to handle than other types of fender. They are also more expensive.

BOW THRUSTERS

This category also includes bow thrusters. These are devices that propel the boat in one direction or maintain its position, thanks to a small motor mounted at the bow of the boat.

They are often used to help maneuver the boat in confined spaces, such as harbors, marinas or cramped areas, or to hold the boat in place while anchored.

There are several types of thruster, including electric, hydraulic, fixed, retractable and external.

Hydraulic bow thrusters are more powerful than electric ones, but consume more energy.

Retractable bow thrusters can be retracted or retracted while sailing, minimizing drag and reducing water resistance as the boat moves forward, which can improve sailing performance.

Thrusters can be operated remotely, usually by remote control or a fixed control box. The choice of bow thruster model depends on the needs and size of the boat.

Anchor lines, such as chains or ropes, are used to connect the anchor to the boat. They must be strong enough to withstand the forces exerted by wind, currents and waves. Chains are often used for their strength and weight, while ropes offer greater elasticity and flexibility. The choice of anchor line depends on the weight of the anchor.
