The role of a VHF marine radioVery High Frequency radio is a mode of communication based on the transmission and reception of waves. The body of the VHF radio is connected to an antenna, which acts as a receiver for the electromagnetic waves emitted by the radio. The antenna transforms these waves into an electrical signal, enabling the message to be properly understood. An external fiberglass or stainless steel antenna will increase the signal strength and range of your VHF's built-in antenna. A microphone often enables the device to be used in reverse, transforming a voice message into a wave that can be heard by nearby boats and radios. |
The benefits of VHFThe VHF offers a number of advantages. It's the most popular radio communication method at sea, perfect for boat-to-boat communication. The system can receive and transmit distress signals, often crucial at sea. This makes VHF radio an essential safety feature. Another advantage of the VHF channel is the ability to receive weather reports in real time. |

Which VHF antenna? It's the VHF antenna that enables you to receive or transmit a radio signal at sea. VHF antennas on boats are usually made of stainless steel or fiberglass. For optimum reception, we recommend antennas measuring between 1 and 2.4 meters. The choice of VHF antenna depends on the type of boat and your fixed VHF. Sailboats and motorboats have different antenna requirements. Motorboats need an antenna capable of withstanding the wind generated by the boat's power and speed. Some antenna models can be folded down, perfect if you need to transport your boat on a trailer. VHF antennas for powerboats are usually positioned on the flybridge, coachroof or rollbar. VHF antennas for sailboats are installed at the masthead or on the aft balcony. To mount your antenna properly, it's essential to opt for a sturdy mounting bracket and a suitable antenna support. You'll need a bracket for mounting on the mast of your sailboat. Owners of motorboats, semi-rigid craft, open boats or helmsmen will opt for a product with a ball-and-socket joint. The quality of the cable routing inside the boat and the connection to the PL antenna socket will determine the performance of the VHF antenna.
