Is a-subscription required to use the inReach Mini 2?

Yes, to use the inReach Mini 2's satellite functions (messaging, tracking, SOS, position sharing, weather), an inReach subscription is required.
The device uses the Iridium satellite network. Activate and manage your subscription via your Garmin account.
Consumer plans are offered by Garmin and are billed monthly. See details of options and rates here :

Without an active subscription, the device cannot send satellite messages or trigger an SOS. The device remains usable as a basic GPS: it displays position, compass, distance, coordinates, and you can view your saved trips if the device has already been used with an active subscription.

Can-messages be sent to any number or contact with the inReach Mini 2?

Yes: you can send messages to cell phone numbers, e-mail addresses, or to other inReach devices.
Thanks to the application coupled to the smartphone, writing is easier and the device acts as a satellite modem.
Note: cost and sending speed may depend on satellite plan and coverage.

The inReach Mini 2 is an extremely useful and compact safety and communication tool, but it does have certain limitations that you should be aware of before purchasing:
- Mandatory subscription: without an active subscription, satellite functions (messaging, SOS, tracking, weather) are disabled.
- Dependence on the Iridium network: coverage is worldwide, but reception may be reduced under dense forest cover, in canyons or caves.
- Limited display: the device does not display detailed maps, only GPS data and simple routes.
- Complementary use: the inReach Mini 2 is not a substitute for a full-featured GPS navigation system, nor for safety equipment appropriate to your activity (radio, PLB beacon, etc.).
