As a Class B AIS transceiver, the AIS700 receives information broadcast by other vessels, and also transmits information from your own boat to be seen on other boats' systems.
The advantage of a transponder (receiver and transmitter) over a receiver alone is that, by definition, it can both receive and transmit information.
