The lifejacket for safe sea outingsChoosing the right lifejacket is crucial to your safety at sea. Your life depends in part on the quality of your safety equipment. Before going out to sea, make sure your boat has enough lifejackets: one for each person on board. Falls overboard are more common than you might think. Equipped with a lifejacket, a real buoyancy aid, it's more reassuring to wait to be rescued. There are several types of lifejacket: you can opt for a classic lifejacket, or prefer an inflatable one. The latter are easier to wear and more practical for maneuvering. You'll also need to choose between vests with manual or automatic release. Automatic lifejackets usually include a manual option. |
Choosing the right lifejacket for your buoyancy needsRegulations govern the wearing of lifejackets. Since January 2010, this regulation has been determined by Division 240, which defines the models to be worn according to the type of excursion and the navigation zone. This standard gives a buoyancy value expressed in Newtons. If you are sailing within 2 miles of a shelter, you must wear a 50 Newton lifejacket or lifejacket armband. If you're sailing between 2 and 6 miles, you'll need a 100 Newton lifejacket, either foam or inflatable. Beyond 6 miles, your lifejacket must be rated at 150 Newtons. When sailing offshore, the harness and lanyard go with the lifejacket. |
