OPTICAL OBJECTIVE DIAMETER AND MAGNIFICATION OF MARINE BINOCULARS

What are the characteristics to consider when choosing a model of marine binoculars?

  • The ratio of magnification to diameter of the 7x50 lenses

The ideal ratio for marine binoculars est 7x50. A magnification x7 and an optical diameter of 50mm. It is a perfect compromise between zoom, stability, sharpness, light and field of view.

  • 7x30 optics

Smaller optics, such as the 7x30will be less bright with a smaller field of vision, but will have the advantage of being more compact. If you navigate occasionally or only by clear weather, they can be of a good quality / price ratio.

  • BAK-4 or BAK-7 prisms

The quality of the glasses will be designated by the names BAK-4 or BAK-7. The BAK-7 prisms are standard quality glass sets in borosilicate. The BAK-4 prisms are, as for them, of a high qualityBarium, give a sharper image with more detail and 30% more brightness.

  • Lens treatment

In addition, lenses receive treatments ranging from simple improvement of the luminosityto the reverberation suppression. The multilayer treatmentfor example, benefits from a UV filter a must-have at sea to prevent damage to your eyesight.

  • Solidity

Some models of marine binoculars will have a rubber coating and a solidity in any test due to a pressurization with nitrogen.

MANUAL OR AUTOFOCUS

The focus is used toimprove the sharpness of a point through a lens. This adjustment is made in relation to the distance that separates you from this point.

In our selection of marine binoculars, you will find models with manual focus by a central wheel system (the most common), adjustable manual focus for each eyepiece, but also, and especially, autofocus binoculars. The latter are the most efficient and offer a significant gain in time and visual comfort when navigating.

The focus is made instantly on the target object, without any intervention from the user. You will enjoy a perfectly clear image through the lenses, regardless of the distance between the lens and what you are looking at.

INTEGRATED BEARING COMPASS

Many marine binoculars will be equipped with bearing compasses. This allows you to easily manage your heading, but also to evaluate distances or heights. The higher end models offer stabilized, high-definition compasses with lighting. They will allow you to navigate in low light or altered light conditions.

The STEINER Commander 7x50C, for example, is equipped with an excellent HD stabilized compass with illumination.

SOME TIPS FROM THE NAUTICAL COUNTER

  • It's worth remembering that your binoculars' built-in bearing compass, acting as a compass in the field of view of the lens, can be considered an additional safety feature available on board.
  • In addition to facilitating observation thanks to its magnification, it can also be useful in the event of damage to your electronic instruments.
  • Regardless of magnification, optics or brightness, if your binoculars are not maintained and, at the very least, rinsed regularly with clean water, the view through the optics may lose effectiveness and the outer coating may wear prematurely. That's why we invite you to take the utmost care of this equipment. Binoculars are waterproof and robust, but not indestructible.
  • Don't hesitate to get in touch with Comptoir Nautique advisers by phone, e-mail or via social networks if you have any questions about the price of binoculars, their characteristics, or the marine binoculars you'll find in our available stock.
