PUMP OPERATION

First and foremost, freshwater pumps distribute freshwater from the tanks to the various points of use on board, such as sinks, showers or toilets. They also pressurize the circuit, maintaining a constant pressure in the system, making water use similar to that of a domestic system. Modern pump models automatically manage the flow of water: they activate as soon as the pressure drops, for example when you open a tap, guaranteeing a continuous, constant flow. Finally, these pumps are distinguished by their versatility, being used not only for domestic needs such as the kitchen or bathroom, but also for specific tasks such as deck cleaning or feeding filtration systems.

The operation of freshwater pumps varies according to type. Boat pumps are often of the diaphragm or centrifugal type. Diaphragm pumps are self-priming-and can run dry without damage, while centrifugal pumps require initial priming to operate correctly. Most freshwater pumps are equipped with a pressure sensor, called a pressure switch, which detects pressure variations in the circuit and automatically triggers the pump if necessary. The closed water cycle is central to their operation: water is drawn from a tank, pressurized by the pump, then distributed evenly through the network of pipes to meet the crew's needs.

TYPES OF PUMPS

When it comes to managing fresh water on board a boat, different types of pumps are available to meet the specific needs of sailors. Each type has its own particularities, advantages and disadvantages. Here's an overview of manual, electric and foot-operated pumps.

  • Manual pumps operate by means of a hand-operated mechanical mechanism, often used to supply a single point of water, such as a sink. They are particularly well-suited to small boats or as a back-up system, as they require neither electricity nor batteries. Their simplicity makes them highly reliable, with minimal risk of breakdown. However, they require constant physical effort and offer limited flow, making them less practical for larger needs.
  • Electric pumps, on the other hand, are the most common on modern boats. Powered by a battery or generator, they automatically dispense fresh water. As soon as a tap is opened, the pump is activated by a pressure sensor, guaranteeing high flow and constant pressure. These pumps are ideal for boats with several water points, such as sinks, showers or toilets. They offer great convenience of use, but installation is more complex, and they depend on the smooth running of the on-board electrical system. What's more, they sometimes require more maintenance due to their electronic and mechanical components.
  • Foot-operated pumps, on the other hand, fall somewhere between the two in terms of operation. They are operated by foot pressure, leaving the user's hands free for other tasks. Extremely robust and economical, these pumps require neither electricity nor major maintenance. They are particularly suitable for small boats or as a back-up solution. They consume less water, as they operate only when the foot is pressed down on the pedal. However, like hand pumps, they require physical effort to pump water and offer a more limited flow than electric models.
