Boat autopilot
Autopilots are becoming an increasingly popular option on boats. Using a boat autopilot enhances the sailing experience. You'll be able to choose a course or simply maintain a heading without having to worry about steering. Whether it's a small transportable sailboat, a trawler, a large cruising yacht or an inboard motorboat, the forces at play and the constraints are very different. While electronic systems are broadly similar for these categories of boats, power units differ depending on whether you have tiller or wheel steering, hydraulic or mechanical steering.

How does autopilot work? This device enables the boat to navigate automatically along a predetermined route. The autopilot is usually controlled by the boat's helmsman, who can program it to follow a route made up of waypoints, or to keep the boat on a set course. The autopilot can be used to help the boat's pilot navigate in difficult conditions, such as on long crossings or in heavy seas. Sensors are used to detect the ship's heading, measure rudder position and track changes in direction. The ACU electronic computer then compares this data with the commands given to correct the course to be followed. |
What types of autopilot are available?Cockpit autopilots for tiller or wheel steering are ideal for boats under 12m. For other, more demanding types of sailing, we recommend an in-board pilot. A yachtsman can easily install a cockpit pilot: just make sure to respect the distance between the tiller axis and the pilot mounting point. A wide range of accessories is available to adapt to all cockpit shapes. The inboard pilot must be adapted to the size of the boat and to the mechanical or hydraulic steering system. For autopilot to operate on a hydraulic helm, a pump must be fitted to the circuit. A mechanical steering system requires a hydraulic or electric actuator installed directly on the steering quadrant. The course is set from the control console. Take a look at Raymarine 's P70s for autopilot, designed specifically for sailboats. In any case, the first thing to consider is whether you need a autopilot for a motorboat or a sailboat, then for a helm or a steering wheel. For example, the autopilot raymarine EV range offers pilots for several types of boat. Packages with actuator, without actuator, with or without display. Depending on the model autopilot, different options are available: A gyrometer can complement the compass function to take account of the boat's movements. Regatta boats wishing to have greater control over their environment can be equipped with heel angle sensors or a 3-axis central unit. A particularly popular model is autopilot Raymarine for ST1000+ tiller steering. The world's best-selling model, the pilot is particularly robust and powerful. There's no better helmsman than autopilot! The choice is yours! |
