Traditional fishfinder: 2D technology

This is the best-known display, and the one found on virtually all fishfinders. It is a 2-dimensional cross-sectional view of the bottom.

Fish are generally represented by arcs. The automatic setting mode is a great help to novice anglers, while the more experienced can optimize detection by adjusting sensitivity, scrolling speed, zoom and frequency settings. Down Imaging technology for enhanced sonar performance

Down Imaging, also known as Downscan or ClearVü depending on the manufacturer, is an indispensable ally for discovering what's going on beneath the surface, revealing things that might otherwise have been missed in 2D.

Based on the same principle as an ultrasound scan, the special processing of high-frequency data produces a very thin beam that takes near-photographic captures of the seabed, which, when placed side-by-side with 2D images, facilitate interpretation.

Down will also enable objects to be distinguished with greater precision. In this image, the branches will appear as a cluster in 2D, whereas with Down you'll have a much clearer vision.

Here too, contrast and sensitivity settings can be used to refine the fishfinder's prospection. Example: to bring out the fish, increase sensitivity and lower contrast.

Downscan frequency is 455 khz to 800 khz.

Side Imaging offers a lateral view

Two side beams scan the sides, with a theoretical range of 120 m each. They thus act as "curtains" that are moved at right angles to each side of the boat.

The advantage of this side-scanning system with 3D representation is that it allows you to scan very far to the sides, with relief representation on the screen. This is purely a system for locating and identifying structures at a distance, which makes it more like sonar than depthfinder.

Quickly survey a large area on either side of the boat, visualize the presence of obstacles dozens of meters away, with photographic quality, and even "read" the winding path of a river bed submerged under 15 meters of water. You can also detect fish or schools of suspended fish at a distance, although without the precision of a conventional fishfinder for fine details.
