Power unit

The power unit is the link between your boat's autopilot and the steering system. It is this power unit, also known as the autopilot motor or drive unit, which acts on your steering system. An electric or hydraulic linear actuator is preferred for sailboats, and a hydraulic pump for powerboats with hydraulic steering. Some sailboats, such as the recent Dufour, use rotary engines. Which power unit for which helm system?

If your helm system is hydraulic, it is advisable to refer to your helm system documentation to determine the capacity of the hydraulic steering cylinder fitted to the boat.

Motorboats with older Z-Drive bases, such as Four Winns or Ombrine, are generally fitted with cable steering with hydraulic assistance. For these boats, a universal Z-Drive kit should be installed.

Sailboats with mechanical steering systems can use one of two types of cylinder, depending on the space available and the possibility of installation:

  • Hydraulic linear actuator: This self-contained unit consists of a hydraulic actuator, a reversible pump and a reservoir. The hydraulic linear power unit is attached directly to the rudder quadrant or, if no rudder tube anchorage is available, by adding a wicker arm. Advantages: no wear as the hydraulic circuit is closed + very low tiller friction.
  • Electric linear actuator: Installation is similar to that of a hydraulic actuator, with the difference that this model takes up less space due to its monobloc construction. Strengths: powerful thrust + silent operation.

Adapted to mechanical systems, theDD15 power unit from Simrad is particularly compact and powerful. The motor can be installed on boats from 30 to 40 feet. The universal Z Drive kit can be fitted to boats equipped with a sterndrive motor with power steering. The tiller is operated like a steering cable!
