The relay consists of remote switches , which are electromagnetic switches , enclosed in a special casing that protects it from marine corrosion.
The relay receives the signal from the windlass controls , which can be buttons , switches or remote controls , and switches the current from the battery to the windlass motor, reversing the direction of rotation as the anchor rises or falls . The relay thus enables the windlass to be controlled without the risk of overheating or short-circuiting the low-current controls .
